Propellor, the innovative tech hub platform launched in cooperation with IFFR, The Berlinale’s EFM, Cinemathon and CPH:DOX, has successfully held its first pop-up event in Rotterdam on Jan 31 – Feb 1 during IFFR 2017.
The event, Kickstart, gathered 44 professionals from 12 countries. The participants came from the film industry and beyond, and in 10 teams of four came up with innovative ideas and projects. The projects were pitched at the event, then put forward during the CineMart awards at the festival, were the final winner was announced.
Culture cues, deemed a “tinder-like app” for movies, won the award, which included participation to the Propellor Bootcamp Session in Berlin later in 2017. This app allows viewers to browse through trailers and select their preferences, making it easier for distributors and exhibitors to deliver targeted and relevant film campaigns.
“I am thrilled at how well this first edition went, and how positive the feedback has been, how dedicated and hard-working everybody has been, and of course big kudos to IFFR and their extremely passionate team who supported this event from the very first minute,” Cinemathon’s Erwin Schmidt told IFFR Pro.

Through its nomadic events Propellor aims to test the ground and selected the best possible innovative ideas. The event series will continue with Speednic in Berlin on February 14, followed by Springboard in Copenhagen during CPH:DOX. Join us at the Rainmaking Loft March 18-19, to a two-day ideation workshop for interdisciplinary participants and use this weekend as a springboard into the future of the film industry.
