CPH:DOX met up with DOX:AWARD winners Robert Machoian & Rodrigo Ojeda-Beck to talk about ”God Bless the Child” that has its European premiere at the 13th edition of the documentary film festival.
What is it that you wish to tell with “God Bless the Child”?
“God Bless the Child” is a film based off a story my father told me about his up bringing. Rodrigo and I’s hope was to tell his story; he was the oldest boy with four younger sisters. This was our initial purpose; our wish was just to share that story with others. What we found out was that more individuals have a similar story. We have met so many individuals that related to Harper in the film. We’ve also met many others that were one of the younger siblings.
What do you hope “God Bless the Child” will result in?
This story though individual, is Universal; our hope is that people will enjoy the film, but also think about the film afterwards. We find it the greatest complement when individuals tell us they spent time after wards still thinking about our film. It’s a great honor.
How did you feel when you found out that you were nominated in DOX:AWARD at CPH:DOX?
It’s almost impossible to express our emotions when we found out we were nominated at CPH:DOX. The children worked so hard on this film, they gave a lot of their time, and stayed committed to making the best film they could. It put a lot of responsibility on Rodrigo and I to do a good job as well, and a lot of pressure on Laura, Rob and Kirstin, to do the best also. So to be nominated, it’s such a great honor and in many ways to us validates that we did do our very best, and the response from the audience at the festival we have felt that as well.
